When Is It Time to Replace Breast Implants?
2/17/2026
One of the most common questions we hear from patients who previously had breast augmentation is:
"How long do implants last?"
While implants are long-lasting medical devices, they are not considered lifetime devices. That doesn't mean they automatically need to be replaced after a certain number of years - but it does mean they should be monitored over time.
If you've had breast implants for several years, here's how to know whether it may be time to consider replacement.
Do Breast Implants Expire?
Modern implants are designed to be durable and safe. Many patients keep their impmlants 10-20 years or longer without issue.
However, implants do not have a guaranteed lifetime. The likelihood of rupture or complications increases gradually over time.
You do not need to replace implants "just because" they reach 10 years - but evaluation is important.
Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Implants
1. Implant Rupture
Saline rupture is usually obvious - the breast deflates.
Silicone rupture may be silent and detected on imaging.
2. Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue around the implant tightens.
You may notice:
- Firmness
- Distortion
- Discomfort
- Change in shape
In moderate to severe cases, implant exchange with capsule treatment may be necessary.
3. Changes in Your Body
Your implants may not have changed - but your body has.
Common reasons for elective replacement:
- Weight fluctuations
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Aging skin and tissue changes
- Desire for a different size or profile
Some patients simply want a more natural look, smaller size, or updated implant technology.
4. Implant Rippling or Visibility
As natural breast tissue thins with age, implant edges may become more noticeable.
Switching implant type, adjusting placement, or combining with a lift may improve contour.
5. You're Simply Ready for a Change
Many patients choose implant exchange not because of a complication - but because their aesthetic goals have evolved.
You may want:
- A size adjustment
- A more proportional shape
- A breast lift combined with exchange
- Implant removal with or without lift
This is a very personal decision - and a common one.
Do You Have to Replace Implants Every 10 Years?
No.
There is no automatic 10-year rule. If your implants are intact, comfortable, and you're happy with the appearance, replacement is not mandatory.
That said, routine monitoring is important - especially for silicone implants.
What Happens During Implant Exchange?
Implant replacement surgery typically involves:
- Removing the existing implant
- Addressing scar tissue if needed
- Placing a new implant (or removing without replacement)
- Possibly combining with a breast lift for optimal shape
Recovery is often similar to - or sometimes easier than - your original breast augmentation, depending on the extent of revision.
When Should You Schedule a Consultation?
You should consider scheduling a consultation if:
- Your implants are 10+ years old
- You've noticed firmness or shape changes
- You suspect rupture
- Your aesthetic goals have changed
- You're simply unsure and want evaluation
Even if you're not ready for surgery, an exam can provide clarity and peace of mind.
The Bottom Line
Breast implants are long-lasting - but not lifetime devices. Replacement isn't always necessary, but evaluation becomes more important as time passes.
